Keep in mind that when politicians get together, they don’t ever talk about removing laws (and thus, giving liberty a bit of breathing space.) They just throw heaps of new laws onto the pile. Much of the time they don’t even read or understand what they are legislating. The best they ever do is replacing one law for another.
Every time they get together a little more of our freedom is legislated away. This year, the 50 states combined passed 40,697 laws. Over 400 of those laws were passed in my home state of Michigan. Here in Michigan they are considering 400 to be a low number of laws to pass in a year, and thus it’s viewed in our government-loving culture as a sign of low political productivity. Statism is a disease.
From a CNN article on the 40,697 new ways that local state governments expanded further into the lives of private citizens:
Legislatures in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico met in 2009, leading to the enactment of 40,697 laws, many of which take effect January 1. The new laws cover a variety of areas, from texting and tanning beds to human trafficking and seat-belt safety.
Our Founding Fathers revolted against an ever-expanding government. It’s time for a New Great Experiment.
